Statement from MSSP Regarding the Passing of Evan Williams

Members of MSSP were deeply saddened by the death of our friend, colleague and member Evan Williams in August 2021.

Evan Williams

Evan was one of the founding members of MSSP and was greatly liked and respected by those of us who knew him. He was also an excellent researcher with a strong commitment to social issues. Despite only receiving his PhD last year Evan was already making a significant contribution to academic knowledge and policy debate regarding social security and the UK’s benefit conditionality regime. We encourage readers to view this tribute to Evan’s life and work published by the University of Glasgow, the institution where he received his doctorate and continued working as post-doctoral researcher. This provides links to blogs, research summaries and peer-reviewed journal articles written by Evan.

As a highly-valued member of MSSP Evan was a leading participant in activities to bring early career researchers together, from event organisation to presenting his own work on multiple occasions. He was a key member of the organising team for our successful event on social security devolution at the University of Edinburgh in 2018. Evan was also a funny, kind and thoughtful member of our group who helped to make MSSP not only a professional network, but a group of friends.

We express our sincere condolences to Evan’s family, friends, and partner Clara, who is also a member of MSSP. Evan will be dearly missed by members of our network, and we are committed to finding ways to raise awareness of and pay tribute to his academic and personal contribution in the future.
